I got all the Fairyland girls out for pictures the other day.  Běla got a new outfit.  I originally made it for one of the Soom teenie gems I have but it fits the littlefee better.  I just lucked out that I happened to have socks that matched.

Here are some of my favorites:

I just purchased a Sekonic Twinmate L-208 light meter off ebay.

Sekonic Twinmate L-208

Its to go with my Zorki 4 camera that I bought, I’ll post pics of that when it finally arrives.  The zorki is a completely manual camera so I was going to need a light meter.  I had no idea they could be so expensive, that’s why I turned to ebay.  I’m not a professional, I’m just having fun.

I did a few experiments using my nikon D70 and the light meter.

This first picture was taken using the in camera meter (ISO 200, 1/50 shutter speed, f8).

This second picture I took in manual mode using the reading off the light meter (ISO 200, shutter speed 1/50, f5).

Now I know the meters work differently, the in camera one reading reflected light and the hand held one reading incident light.  I’ve also read that digital cameras typically underexpose but I didn’t think the difference would be that much.  I think for all my doll pics I’m going to be using the little light meter.

It’s been about a month since I got my iPhone. Since pretty much everyone I know has a smartphone I guess it was my turn. I’ve been using it for photos more than anything else. Instagram is my favorite app right now. Here are some of my favorite pics so far.

I promise to update on doll stuff soon, been working on several commissions.

flickr – friends only?

I’ve noticed lately that there seems to be a lot of people in the doll community changing their flickr to friends only.  I really can’t get it out of my head.  I don’t mean to offend anyone, especially someone who has had their images stolen to be passed off as belonging to another.  I’m sure that these people feel like a victim and are reacting in a normal way.

It’s the people who are angry that someone has stolen their doll’s “look” or even weirder, those who are upset because a lot of people are marking their pics as favorites.  Not getting too much into the debate over what constitutes copying a dolls character but we are all dealing with limited accessories (wigs, clothes, faceup colors) that it is a real fine line.  After all in our visual world we are bombarded by inspiration every day, who knows where the ideas come from.  Is anything truly original?

What gets me is that this is such a visual hobby.  In fact most of the discussion threads on Den of Angels are filled up with pictures.  One could get a doll and hide it away in a closet and never show a soul but what fun is that?  By posting our images online we are taking a risk that they might be stolen, but the feedback you get and the community you take part in far out weighs that risk.

I hope that this is not a trend because I think the community as a whole suffers from the lack of involvement of these talented people.

Sometimes I’m just blown away by the creativity I find when reading others’ blogs.  Like this idea for displaying dolls.

I found this on Jointed Love. It grew out of her need to find space for her dolls as they were taking up too much room on her desk.  Read the blog post to find out more and she has a lovely blog with gorgeous images of her dolls.

a new faceup

I gave my first doll a new faceup last night, I’m getting better at it but those eyebrows still give me trouble.  The lips bug me, she has such thin little lips, they are so hard to paint.

I also got in the new close up filters for my camera so I was able to get a good detail picture.  They are a decent option for when you just can’t afford a macro lense.

This girl should get a bit more attention since I had to sell my minifee.  I hate to have to sell a doll I like but I can always get her again in the future when money isn’t so tight.
